Things to Know Before Building a PC for Office Work

Mandatory TPM 2.0 Support:

Ensure your motherboard features TPM 2.0 (Trusted Platform Module). This security feature hardware-encrypts sensitive data, passwords, and encryption keys. While virtually all modern motherboards support TPM 2.0, older models do not—and TPM 2.0 is mandatory for installing Windows 11 Pro.

Choose CPUs with Integrated Graphics:

For standard office work, avoid dedicated graphics cards to keep power consumption and costs low.

1. Intel: Select processors without the "F" suffix (e.g., Core i3-12100 or Core i5-13400).
2. AMD: Choose APUs with a "G" suffix (e.g., Ryzen 5 5600G or Ryzen 5 8500G).

Memory Baseline (RAM):

1. 16GB (2 x 8GB Dual Channel): The standard baseline for modern office multitasking and smooth browser usage.
2. 32GB (2 x 16GB): Best suited for heavy data analysis, large database management, or running virtual machines.

Always Choose NVMe SSDs:

1. Avoid traditional Mechanical Hard Drives (HDDs) for operating system drives. NVMe SSDs provide drastically faster boot times, quick application loading, and smooth file transfers.

Don't compromise on the Power Supply (PSU):

1. Avoid low-quality, unrated PSUs bundled with cheap cases. They lack basic surge protection and can destroy hardware during voltage fluctuations.

Windows 11 Pro vs. Home:

1. If the desktop needs to connect to an institutional network, run Active Directory, join a corporate domain, or utilise BitLocker Drive Encryption, always opt for Windows 11 Pro.

Connectivity & Desk Footprint:

1. Wi-Fi & Bluetooth: If your workspace lacks dedicated Ethernet ports at every desk, choose a motherboard with built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.
2. Aesthetics: Choose a sleek, compact cabinet without RGB lighting to maintain a professional workspace appearance.
